FAQ / good to know
The economic upturn associated with the construction of the Arlberg Railway promoted the establishment of the Fohrenburg Brewery in 1880. The driving force was Ferdinand Gassner, a partner of the company Getzner, Mutter und Cie., who founded the operation with eleven shareholders. He had been looking for a suitable location for some time as he recognized the increasing demand for beer due to the new railway lines. Eventually, he found the former tavern Bad Fohrenburg – an earlier bathhouse. The newly created steam brewery and innovative cooling technology made Fohrenburg the most modern brewery in Vorarlberg at its opening. It also grew rapidly and was soon expanded and equipped with a bottling plant in 1884. Refrigerated beer wagons made it possible for sales to occur even in more distant areas. A beer garden was created along with the largest event hall in Bludenz. In the 1920s, around 60 people were employed at the Fohrenburg Brewery. During the years of the Great Depression after 1929, the textile company Getzner, Mutter und Cie. entered as the largest shareholder, which ensured the operation's continuation. After 1945, the brewery experienced a resurgence that lasted into the 1990s. Following a business slump, it was taken over by the Rankweil beverage company Rauch. Since then, significant investments have been made, first in the new brewing house in 2011 and in 2019 the Fohrenburg Lada was opened.
